Potential Cable Damage On 2017 Parts From Spool 8766-3

July 31, 2017 | 0 comments | Corey Hyer

Spectrum Sports Intl recently discovered that some climbing wall cables replaced on our national service route in 2017 may have damaged sections of cable. This affects cables created from Spool# 8766-3.

All new cables were inspected prior to their installation by our technician. However, as a precaution, Spectrum Sports Intl recommends that each of our customer’s having cables from this spool visually inspect their cables along the entire length for signs of visible damage to any section, such as frays, kinks, flat spots, cuts, bird caging, or other visible damage to the cable that could weaken or affect the integrity of the cable. This visual inspection should already be taking place on a daily basis as per Spectrum Sporst Intl’s Operations Manual.

Please contact us immediately if you discover any damage to your cables and provide photo documentation of such damage:

RGB LED Handhold grips for climbing walls

LED Handholds for New & Existing Climbing Walls

RGB LED Handholds can add some serious “pop” to your climbing wall, and they are one of easiest and best ways to upgrade your existing equipment. We’ve been designing and testing LED systems for over 2 years, and we’re very pleased to offer a package that is easy to install, robust, and attractive.

Some Background…
In 2008 we became the distributor for a European product called the DigiWall. It’s a 9’H traverse climbing wall / video game system that features some pretty amazing handhold grips with red LED lights and SENSORS. At IAAPA that year more than a few people were intrigued about adding this kind of grip to their existing rock wall.

At the show we began working with a client in Destin, FL, and LED handholds were at the top of their list. That project came to fruition in the summer of 2013.

In 2014 we installed LED handholds on 2 portable units, including our IAAPA display model. Needless to say, we were hooked! The LED lights in these projects made such a huge impact.

All of these previous jobs were very labor intensive requiring several hand-solder connections per grip. That meant that a typical climbing wall could take DAYS to wire! After IAAPA 2014 our Senior Operations Manager, Lance Christiansen worked tirelessly to create a package that would be easier to install. The result is a new plug-n-play system that can be easily added to any new or existing climbing wall.

Okay, here’s the part you’ve probably been waiting for – a quick rundown on the installation. Take the time to do it right, and you’ll only have to do it once!

  1. Remove the existing handhold grips that will be replaced with LED grips
  2. Attach the supplied steel template to an existing T-nut using your handhold bolt
  3. Using the template as a guide, drill a hole on each side of the handhold bolt. You may want to start with a smaller pilot hole depending on the thickness of your climbing surface. One hole is for the LED wires; the other is for an anti-rotation bolt molded into the back of the grip. This prevents the hold from spinning and cutting off your wiring!
  4. Remove the template and repeat for each LED handhold.
  5. Take your new LED handhold and feed the wire connection through the hole and simultaneously slip the anti-rotation bolt into the hole on the opposite side of the T-nut.
  6. Tighten the handhold bolt
  7. When all of the handhold are installed, you are ready to connect the wiring harness.
  8. Start at the top of your climbing wall and begin to clip the handholds into the matching clips on the wiring harness. This portion goes very quickly! The wiring harness has clips spaced every 24″.  If the distance between grips exceeds that, you simply skip a clip on the harness.
  9. Attach your controller and power supply. Controllers come in various styles, and power supplies can be either 12v, 110v, or whatever you need!

How to Operate
The RGB LED controllers that we offer feature a color wheel that allows you to literally “dial-in” almost any color for a particular climbing route. You can also opt to run the preset programs, the best of which is a slow fade from one color to the next. Also, be sure to ask about the App that lets you control the colors from your phone! Have some fun, and experiment with your new upgrade.
Tips and Notes

  • Not all of your handholds need to be LEDs to make a big impact.
  • Several handhold colors are available, but they do limit the output color of the LED.
  • White handholds work best for indoor centers.

Whether you are looking to upgrade your existing climbing wall, or order a new state-0f-the-art climbing system, we can help!  We look forward to hearing from you.

Maintenance & Training Reminder

June 3, 2014 | 0 comments | Corey Hyer

Memorial Day has come and gone. School is out, and the hot weather is here. I think it’s safe to say that the 2014 season is in full swing! Here at Spectrum Sports International we would like to share some tips to make this a safe season.

Properly maintained equipment inspires trust from your customers. It’s a solid business practice that helps secure repeat customers. As a manufacturer, we’re acutely aware that one accident from a negligent operator can bring bad press and increased insurance premiums to the entire industry. Don’t be the operator who ruins it for everyone!

Annual Replacement Parts
If you operate a climbing wall or zip line, you are required to replace your cables every 12 months. You are also required to replace all pulley bolts.  You can read the actual Safety Bulletins on our “Downloads” page found here.

Wear Items
Certain parts might last longer than a season. The burden lies with the operator to ensure that those parts meet the inspection criteria found in the Owner’s Manual. For example:

Carabineers – Auto-locking gates must snap shut on their own, no grooves or deformations to the body or gate area, no rust or corrosion
Swivels – must rotate smoothly along the horizontal plane, no vertical play in the joint, and no grooves or deformation to the body of the device
Harnesses – inspect the stitching, attachment loop, straps, and buckles.

A comprehensive list can be found in your Owner’s Manual. “When in doubt, change it out” is always the best policy.

It is advisable to clean your equipment frequently, and doing so will most definitely extend the life of your product. A heated pressure washer can do wonders to remove the grime that builds up over a season. Avoid spraying hydraulic and electrical components with high pressure. We also recommend applying a protective coating such as automotive wax or furniture polish to steel parts.

It’s important that your staff understand the concepts behind the safety systems on the equipment you operate. Now is a good time to review your Owner’s Manual with your crew. Make sure everyone understands how to properly transport, setup, inspect, operate, and takedown the product. Contact us if you need a replacement Owner’s Manual.

We also offer On-Site Training for a fee. It’s perfect for new employees, managers, and crew chiefs alike. You should check with your insurer provider to see if this type of training will qualify you for a discounted premium rate.  You can request a quote for training on our website here.

Spectrum Sports International is dedicated to helping you have a safe and profitable season. We have a full-time parts and service department that is waiting to assist you in any way possible. Let us know if you need anything, and we hope you have a great season!
